Character work is caricature with the subject taken away. You invent the face and then have to draw it again from any angle, which is much harder than it sounds. I built him off a real jawline I had drawn years earlier at a market, turned him around, sheeted the expressions and wrote the rules down for the animator. He never fully closes his mouth. That was the note that made him work.
